  5.     In the blood-spattered politics of the Middle East, the
  6. softest target for terrorists is often the fragile peace
  7. process. Last week's brutal gun-and-grenade attack on an
  8. excursion bus in Egypt killed nine Israeli tourists but also
  9. claimed a tenth victim: a hoped-for meeting between U.S.,
  10. Egyptian and Israeli officials to try to get stalled talks
  11. moving again. The prospect of an imminent get-together was
  12. dashed by the raid, which also left 20 Israelis injured.

  14.     Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Israeli Prime Minister
  15. Yitzhak Shamir promised in a phone call that they would not
  16. allow the attack to threaten Israeli-Egyptian relations. But
  17. it could strengthen the hand of Israeli hard-liners at this
  18. week's crucial meeting of the Likud bloc's Central Committee.
  19. Industry and Trade Minister Ariel Sharon says the bus tragedy
  20. is proof that the Arabs want blood, not peace. He plans to load
  21. more amendments onto Shamir's already heavily encumbered plan
  22. for Palestinian elections.

  24.     Meanwhile, Egyptian police have made the bus killings their
  25. top priority. Evidence suggests the culprits were rejectionist
  26. Palestinian commandos rather than Egyptian fundamentalists, as
  27. was originally suspected.
